Amenorrhea, No Periods and Acupuncture
Amenorrhea and Acupuncture
Amenorrhea refers to the absence of menstrual periods in women of reproductive age. There are two main types of amenorrhea: primary amenorrhea, where a woman has not started menstruating by the age of 16, and secondary amenorrhea, where a woman who has previously had regular menstrual cycles stops menstruating for three or more consecutive months.
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow (Qi) and promote healing. I’ve seen a lot of women over the years and treated Amenorrhea successfully through acupuncture, diet, stress, emotional issues, lifestyle choices.
Several studies have investigated the potential effects of acupuncture on menstrual disorders, including amenorrhea. Studies show that acupuncture has a positive impact on menstrual regularity and hormonal balance,
The proposed mechanisms by which acupuncture may influence the menstrual cycle include:
- Hormonal Regulation: Acupuncture can affect the release of hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol, which play crucial roles in the menstrual cycle.
- Blood Flow Improvement: Acupuncture enhances blood flow to the reproductive organs, promoting a healthier uterine lining and supporting regular menstrual cycles.
- Stress Reduction: Stress can contribute to hormonal imbalances that affect the menstrual cycle. Acupuncture helps reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
Case History
Sarah (18) came to me complaining of exhaustion, depression, memory fog, headaches, poor sleep, poor appetite and not having a period for over a year. Prior to that, they were scanty and painful. We discussed some of her lifestyle choices which included smoking, poor diet, little exercise and loads of coffee. After we put everything down in writing, it became clear what was going on. After 3 months of Acupuncture and a change in lifestyle choices, Sarah’s periods came back. Sarah now calls once every couple of months for a top up.
